Bern. City gold Ducat 1658 MS62 NGC, KM29, Fr-123, HMZ-2188c. An extremely rare early dated ducat from Bern and very possibly the finest extant. The surfaces showcase exceptional reddish-gold color on both sides and reflective gleam is evident in the fields. Further inspection shows slight natural waviness in the flan, with design features, including the iconic Bern bear, that are nonetheless evenly rendered and brought up to near-completion. Essentially no marks are seen and only the most inconsequential handling defines the grade. A search of archived auction records yields only a single other record of this type over the past decade plus. That example, sold recently by Sincona for 11,000 Swiss Francs, was graded "sehr schön-vorzüglich" which roughly translates to a choice XF or AU by American standards; inspection of the images of that coin does reflect less highpoint detail (likely due to a combination of strike and handling). As clearly the finer of the two seen (and not surprisingly the only example graded by NGC or PCGS), we anticipate this exceptional example will be met with great enthusiasm. From the Redwood Collection of Swiss Coins
