Switzerland
Bern. City gold Ducat 1789 MS64 NGC, KM139, Fr-172, HMZ-2215f. A captivating near-Gem of this unusually designed trade issue, conditionally very rare in the observed state. While the crowned shield with bear is standard for issues of Bern, the reverse varies notably and sets this issue apart from most. Unlike the typical wreathed presentation, most of the reverse inscription sits inside an oval cartouche, with a thin garland of floral ornamentation at top. Below the cartouche sits the denomination. Given the appearance, crisply defined throughout and accompanied by impressively vivid orange-gold tone, certainly among the top survivors, with the added classification of being finest certified at NGC or PCGS certainly aiding its desirability. From the Redwood Collection of Swiss Coins
