St. Gallen. Abbot Beda Angehrn gold Ducat 1773 MS63 NGC, KM21, Fr-363, HMZ-2865a. By Johann Haag - "H". A great rarity in the Swiss series and especially sought by collectors due to the combination of its iconic design as well as it being one of the only classic gold-struck issues from the Abbey of Saint Gallen. At least an equal to the finest we have seen (and the single finest graded), this ducat showcases delightful originality, with vibrant tone enhancing both the ornate coat of arms on the obverse as well as the visually whimsical reverse depiction of St. Gallus offering a piece of bread to an approaching, club-wielding bear. Delicate reflectivity remains in the fields on both sides, with a touch of striking softness, as we note on all but one example in archived auction records, appearing near the crown atop the arms. Those same archives reflect the last sale of this type in 2009, the fact underscoring the rarity and popularity of the type. As such, a most-important appearance for this ducat, and one that, given its long absence from public appearances, we expect to break records.Ex.
