Vaud. Canton 39 Batzen ND (1830) VF20 NGC, KM-Unl., Dav-Unl., HMZ-2998a. Counterstamps over French 1790-Q Ecu (Dav-1333). Only struck for about a month period during 1830, and while similar in overall execution to the commonly encountered Bern 40 batzen that were stamped in 1816, accomplished in far fewer numbers, with examples infrequently appearing on the market today. Of those encountered, this is certainly among the finest we have seen. Beginning with the host coin, the remaining detail is sharper than most, and although several as-made planchet adjustments are seen on the reverse, they interfere little with the eye-appeal. More important than the host however, the stamps were placed in an impressively bold manner, the all-important denomination stamp showing in a more eye-appealing fashion, in perfect vertical alignment in the field to left of Louis XVI, than any other we have seen. Extremely rare as such! An example that is certain to inspire spirited bidding from the dedicated specialist. From the Redwood Collection of Swiss Coins
