Switzerland
Zurich. City gold Ducat 1646 AU58 PCGS, KM68, Fr-459, HMZ-21138i. Sword & Palm variety. A rare trade issue and among the first dated ducats of Zurich, showcasing facing lions that each hold the city crest on one side and the date and denomination within a wreath on the other. The present example certainly is among the nicest we have seen, with impressive sharpness of the motifs and tone that is mostly orange in hue with crusty reddish color around the wreath to the left of the date. As is commonly the case on this early issue, slight waviness of the flan is evident, and when louped viewing occurs, traces of broad double striking can be detected, the CON of CONSERVA being faintly evident beginning at the E. Altogether, an example that should be of great importance to the specialist, with its finest-certified status only serving to add further significance. From the Redwood Collection of Swiss Coins
