Philip V Real 1732-Mo XF Details (Saltwater Damage) NGC, Mexico City mint, KM75.1 ("Rare"). A sea-salvaged coin - possibly from the 1733 Plate Fleet or the Hollandia -, well struck for the issue with nicely detailed globes on the obverse and shield on the reverse. Actual wear is limited and surface porosity from water immersion is moderate. The very rare no-assayer variety for this date, generally acknowledged as the first struck for the denomination. Quite attractive despite the noted shortcomings and the finest example of this very elusive issue seen by the cataloguer - including the ex. Romero de Terreros coin now in the collection of the Banco de Mexico. As such, an immensely significant coin with a superb pedigree to boot that should pique the interest of the advanced collector of this challenging series. We note the much inferior ex. D Gray example (Fine, and also with pitted surfaces) hammered for $3,100 in a fairly recent sale (Stack's Bowers 10/2014, lot 7323). Ex. Norweb Collection (Christie's Dallas 5/1985, lot 208, described as "strictly very fine, but excessively rare").From the Rudman Collection of Mexican Coins, Part III

Estimate: 3500-4500 USD
