Philip V 4 Reales 1732-Mo AU58 NGC, Mexico City mint, KM94. Nearly Uncirculated with barely any signs of high-point friction, strong underlying luster under rich old patina and attractive surface quality for the assigned grade. One of only two choice examples (from a total of 5) of this iconic and very rare no-assayer variety – together with the Norweb-Ortiz coin (Christie's Dallas 5/1985, lot 190) – seen by the cataloguer, excessively rare in this magnificent quality. Gilboy considers the few known examples of this no-assayer variety as "trial pieces struck directly from the matrix sent from Madrid". A short comment on this matter is due here: if that plausible explanation is indeed correct, it seems logical that the use of the matrix was limited to produce the reverse (shield side) die. Indeed, the examination of the known examples of this variety yields one common reverse die and three different obverse dies, and matrices dated 1732 (these were prepared in 1729, thus dating them 1732 would have been a rather remarkable act of prediction) could not have been sent from Madrid. In any case, a remarkable coin whose desirability can hardly be overstated. From the Rudman Collection of Mexican Coins, Part III
