GAUL. Bellovaci. Ca. 1st century BC. AV stater (17mm, 6.29 gm, 3h). Highly stylized and Celticized head right with large eye, "wreath" and "star" on cheek / Horse running left, stars above and below. D&T 267. cf. De la Tour 7236 (Veliocasses). A spectacular example of this rare type, deeply stuck in good metal. NGC Choice AU 5/5 - 4/5, scuffs.The Bellovaci were one of the larger and more powerful Belgic tribes in northern Gaul. Their territory extended from modern Beauvais along the northern coastline to the Oise River. Julius Caesar's conquering army encountered them in 52-53 BC. The Bellovaci were led by their king Correus, a canny tactician and a fierce opponent of Roman suzerainty in the Gauls. Correus led an army of 6,000 picked warriors and 1,000 cavalry who, by Caesar's own account, played havoc with the Roman supply lines and foraging parties. Caesar learned in advance of one such ambush and deliberately sent a force into the woodlands to draw out the Bellovaci; once they were fully engaged, he led another party of reinforcements into the battle and counter-enveloped the enemy. Correus refused to surrender and "fell pierced with many wounds." Once defeated, the surviving Bellovaci made formal submission to Caesar and remained loyal Roman allies thereafter.
