Hadrian (AD 117-138). AV aureus (19mm, 7.33 gm, 6h). Rome, AD 125-128. HADRIANVS AVGVSTVS, laureate head of Hadrian right, slight drapery on far shoulder / COS II-I, Hadrian on horseback galloping to right, holding couched lance, cloak billowing behind. RIC 187d. BMCRE 437. Calicó 1224a. A highly attractive example of this scarce type, with a handsome bust and light reddish tone. NGC Choice XF★ 5/5 - 5/5, Fine Style.Although his reign was largely peaceful, Hadrian took great care to maintain the Roman military machine in a high state of readiness. His extensive touring of the Empire's frontier provinces can be seen in military terms as enforcing his policy of peace through strength. He took a special interest in the cavalry, a role usually handled by native auxiliaries. An inscription found at the site of a fortress in Lambaesis, North Africa, records Hadrian's praise for the Pannonian cavalry unit stationed there: "You did everything according to the book. You filled the training ground with your wheelings, you threw spears not ungracefully."

Estimate: 10000-14000 USD
