Victoria "9 over inverted 9" Cent 1859 MS62 Brown NGC, London mint, KM1. An endlessly sought type by collectors of major Canadian varieties, with countless searches over the years through hoards of the date more often than not ending up fruitless. The almost inexcusable blunder that resulted in a 9 in the date being initially punched upside down obviously resulted in the dies very short life span, and today, NGC and PCGS list only 8 examples in their census after a combined 50+ years of certifying coins. The present example, a marvel set apart from the rest, is the only example to merit a Mint State grade! Glossy throughout, the surfaces are delightfully toned in blue and lavender shades, with subdued reddish-orange mint color in the recesses. No major marks are seen. While certainly difficult to value, the $9,400 realization by the second finest graded piece in our January 2015 auction is certainly telling. As the only Mint State graded example, this stands as a potentially once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the dedicated specialist.

Estimate: 8000-12000 USD
