Charles III 8 Reales 1788 So-DA MS62 NGC, Santiago mint, KM31. sharply struck, lightly toned Uncirculated with substantial underlying mint luster and mild scattered surface marks preventing the Choice designation. The Charles III issues struck in Santiago and the Ferdinand VII issues struck at Popayan represent the more elusive bust 8 Reales issues of the Spanish Colonial mints, rare in any grade and particularly desirable in higher preservation. The present coin, together with the ex. Lissner example dated 1779 (CNG 8/2014, lot 1328 for $15,000) - also certified as MS62 NGC yet a tad weakly struck in the centers - are the only specimens certified as Mint State for the entire Charles III series of Santiago. This handsome, essentially fully struck up coin is thus arguably the finest certified Santiago Charles III 8 Reales in existence and as such, one of the more significant and desirable items in the entire Spanish Colonial bust 8 Reales series.
Estimate: 15000-20000 USD
