Ethiopia
Menelik II silver Pattern Birr EE 1892 (1899/1900) MS65 NGC, Paris mint, cf. KM19, Gill-M9var. Lettered Edge/J.C. Chaplain Signed Obverse variety. 39.5mm/28.15g. An extremely rare pattern issue for Ethiopia with the primary components of the design matching that of the adopted issue, but the obverse having the addition of the designer's signature in the field below Menelik II's chin and the reverse missing the signature and Paris Mint privy marks that were placed in exergue. Clearly struck in presentation quality and lovingly preserved since the time, the surfaces are delicately reflective with a sheath of variegated earthen patina over both sides. The strike is perfect and only a blended contact tick or two prevent an even loftier designation. For the collector of elite world crowns, or even the specialist of Ethiopia that has the other pattern of the date with the reverse signature and no privy marks, a coin that is certain to be a perfect compliment.
