Haile Selassie gold Coronation Medal EE 1923 (1930) MS62 NGC, Addis Ababa mint, Gill-S9. 40mm/36.9g. Designed in Vienna and struck at the Addis Ababa mint, this immense gold medal commemorates the coronation of Haile Selassie. The obverse features his elaborately-detailed bust with the translated legend "The First Haile Selassie" surrounding while the reverse displays an aesthetically pleasing monogram with the star of the trinity within trilobe and an encircling legend that reads "Ethiopia shall stretch forth her hands to God." The largest and arguably rarest of these coronation issues, the present selection contains minor handling marks throughout the fields and evidence of die-clashing on the obverse to the right of the portrait. A bit of softness is expressed atop the highest points, but is easily afforded to a piece of this size and detail. An engaging specimen from all angles and decidedly sharp in hand.
