Carolingian. Charlemagne (768-814) Denier 771-793/4 AU58 NGC, Dorestad mint, Class 2, MEC I-724 var, Prou-57 var, MG-99 var, Dep-410 var. CARO | LVS, in two lines with ligated AR / ΩOΩ | STПD, in two lines with horizontal axe below, a pellet above the axe. This is a beautiful example of this very scarce type, the variety here defined by the deformed "D" and "R." The surfaces are lustrous and the overall appearance is that of a coin that is essentially as struck.
