GORDIAN III AFRICANUS, A.D. 238-244. AV Aureus (4.99 gms), Rome Mint, A.D. 240. NGC MS, Strike: 5/5 Surface: 3/5.
RIC-42; Calico-3205. "IMP CAES M ANT GORDIANVS AVG" Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Gordian III facing right; Reverse: "LIBERALITAS AVG II" Liberalitas standing facing left, holding cornucopiae and abacus. The youngest sole Roman emperor during the united Roman Empire, Gordian ascended to the role of Augustus at the age of thirteen. Like most underage heads of state, Gordian was emperor in name only, as a group of senators led the government. This council of senators ruled until a new Praetorian Prefect named Timesitheus married his daughter to the young emperor, effectively becoming the de facto ruler of the empire. Gordian died while attempting to secure the eastern frontier of the empire against the Persians, at the tender age of nineteen. Conflicting sources state that he died in battle, though some claim he was betrayed by the man who would succeed him, Philip (the Arab). Gorgeous luster with a crisp strike. Lovely in hand. NGC MS, Strike: 5/5 Surface: 3/5.

Estimate: $5000.00- $7000.00
