BOLIVIA. Silver Medal, 1865. Potosi Mint. NGC MS-62.
Fonr-9671; Bur-92. "Hero and Savior General Melgarejo" medal. Athena in military attire advancing left, brandishing sword and shield with Bolivian arms; Reverse: Three line inscription within wreath. After a stint in the military, Mariano Melgarejo became president of Bolivia from 1864 to 1871, or more accurately dictator. His corruption was only matched by his incompetence, and his end came in exile (Lima, Peru) where he was assassinated by Aurelio Sanchez, the enraged brother of his lover. Medium tone and without defects, some dusty orange highlights glimpsed around the rim and in the most protected areas. A very desirable mint state example, and certainly one of the finest extant. NGC MS-62.

Estimate: $1500.00- $2000.00
