COSTA RICA. "Carrillo" 2 Reales, ND (Decree of November 19, 1841 issued by President Braulio Carrillo Colina). San Jose Mint. NGC VF-20.
KM-11; Guardian-Type VI. Type I, double six-pointed star within circle. RARE. Initial test punch on obverse between "FIRME" and "Y" of the legend, plug removed from reverse above the arms of Peru, double six-pointed star applied to center of obverse. All on an 1828-JM Peruvian Republic 2 Reales. The test punch and removal of the plug of silver is standard for this issue. To verify that the coins were in fact silver they tested them first with the punch mark in the legend. Then proceeded to remove the plug of silver and then apply the double six-pointed star countermark. According to sources the removal of the plug of silver was done so to pay for the countermarking of these coins. While this cataloger believes this to be true I also believe that regardless of denomination they were all mutilated in a similar fashion with the test punch, plug removal and star countermark all in the same general locations for each type of host coin. A Lovely example from this elusive series and quite a bit nicer than normally seen for any denomination. Most examples range in grades from Good to Fine with few better not to mention that many have other issues such as being cleaned or additional holes. A few trivial marks on the obverse are mentioned for accuracy. Though one of the more common denominations it is one of the finest, our records indicate 3 examples for this host coin of which this piece ranks the finest. Attractive old medium grey toning showing a multitude of hues amongst the devices. NGC VF-20.

Estimate: $2500.00- $3500.00
