CUBA. Peso, 1897. NGC MS-66.
Bruce-X#M1. With "PAT97" on truncation of neck and wide spaced date. Reported mintage of 828, and with the piece offered here being in SUPERB MINT STATE condition. A fabulous example of what many consider to be a superior design to the one actually employed for production. The cheek of the portrait has a slight cherubic quality to it that adds a great deal of charm to the personification of liberty. The 1898 production struck coins have lower relief and less detail in the hair. They also have the addition of the denomination on the reverse which is missing here along with the date being moved to under the portrait from the fields. Nearly all white with a hint of sky blue clear tone. A coin with little room for improvement and that is sure to gain the attention of specialists in Cuban coinage. Nice strike, frosty and highly attractive. NGC MS-66.
