FRANCE. Franc a Cheval, ND (1360). Jean II LeBon (1350-64). NGC MS-63.
Fr-279; Duplessy-294. Also known as "John The Good", Jean II faced multiple disasters unfolding in France at the time this coin was issued. The plague killed off nearly half the French population, while at the same time Jean II found himself imprisoned in London, essentially held for ransom. Upon his release in 1360 (the year this coin was struck) after the signing of Treaty of Brétigny, France lost nearly a third of its territory to England. The piece offered here is an exquisite slice of those tumultuous times, and is sensationally well preserved. Struck from remarkably fresh dies, the coin exhibits warm brilliant luster and a minimum of strike doubling. Part of the obverse legend is off the flan. However, the shortcoming is more than compensated for by the crisp rigid characteristics of the flan, which is delightfully free of creases or other anomalies. A real prize for collectors of French gold coinage, this piece should see spirited competition for ownership as it crosses the auction block. NGC MS-63.

Estimate: $2000.00- $3000.00
