GERMANY. Lippe-Detmold. Taler, 1713-BHL. Friedrich Adolf (1697-1718). NGC EF-40.
Dav-2379; KM-131. RARE. From a mintage of only 2,057 pieces, and the highest numerically graded piece at NGC. Oldest of 16 children, Friedrich Adolf broke tradition with his predecessors by raising his own company of Lippe troops. Previously, the Holy Roman Empire had been paid a subsidy in lieu of military obligations. His building work overburdened the territory's finances, causing Peter the Great to comment in 1716 during a visit in Bad Pyrmont: "Your Highness is too big for this country". Remarkably well preserved, particularly for the assigned straight grade. The portrait bears a striking resemblance to the contemporary painting produced by Hans Hinrich Rundt of him. The curls are fully present in the hair, all of the detail remains in the armor, and the reverse devices retain nearly all of their original detail. Lightly toned with no major marks and with a trace of residual luster, the piece is an outstanding example of this seldom encountered type. NGC EF-40.
Estimate: $2000.00- $3000.00
