GERMANY. Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorp. Silver Marriage Medal, 1668. Christian Albrecht (1659-95). NGC AU-58.
51.7 mm; 58.20 gms. Lange-366. By Johann Hohn. Figures of Christian Albrecht and his wife Princess Frederica Amalia of Denmark at center seated on bench engaging in a kiss with table beside them. Arch of vines and legend above; Reverse: Two palm trees linked by a chain and lock with two birds below faced beak to beak, above heavenly arm extends from clouds holding key with legend beside. Struck to commemorate the political marriage of Christian Albrecht and Frederica Amalia which occurred on October 24, 1667. The marriage was arranged in an attempt to calm hostilities between the far northern German Duchy and its neighbor Denmark. Unfortunately the marriage failed to assuage the belligerent parties on either side and throughout Christian Albrecht's reign his Danish in laws would periodically occupy his lands. Nevertheless the marriage remained intact until Christian's death in 1695. The medal is very attractive and well preserved with only mild friction to the highest points of relief. Nicely toned with mild to medium old cabinet toning accented by shades of royal blue and electric turquoise in some of the protected areas. A very desirable piece in a hard to find level of preservation. NGC AU-58.

Estimate: $700.00- $1000.00
