GREAT BRITAIN. Kings of Wessex. AR Penny, After 886. Alfred the Great (871-99). PCGS Genuine--Tooled, AU Details Secure Holder.
Brooke-Pl-XIII-9; North-644; S-1061. RARE. Third Coinage. One of only two British kings to be given the epithet "Great", (the other being Cnut), his rule marked the beginning of Britain as a unified nation after repelling Viking (Danish) invaders in the Battle of Edington. This handsome silver penny from the reign of Alfred The Great features a remarkably clear portrait with nearly complete legend. The reverse depicts a stylized monogram for the City of London with cross above. Evidence of light tooling seen within the "D" in the monogram, presumably to remove deposits. A single shallow crack on the reverse which does not penetrate the flan to the obverse, and with attractive blue and gray toning. Well centered, well struck, the example offered here is easily one of the finest extant. The current Spink catalog lists nothing above VERY FINE, which is listed at £8,500. Recently closed auctions at Spink in London (December 2012) have seen examples hammered for as much as £18,000 ($28,500) in similar condition to what is seen here. PCGS Genuine--Tooled, AU Details Secure Holder.

Estimate: $7000.00- $10000.00
