GREAT BRITAIN. Angel, (1505-09). Henry VII (1485-1509). PCGS MS-62 Secure Holder.
Fr-151; S-2187; North-1698; Woodhead-542. Downward pheon mint mark. New type; angel with both feet on dragon. Obverse legends with double saltire stops and large crook shaped abbreviation marks. Crossed crosslet spear shaft. Henry VII was the last British king to seize the throne on the field of battle, having defeated Richard III in the Battle of Bosworth Field in 1485, effectively ending the War of The Roses and thereby becoming the first of the Tudor Kings to rule Britain. The stability and prosperity Henry VII brought about can be seen in his widely varied gold coinage, with the piece offered here having distinctive double saltires in the legends. That said, the single attribute which clearly sets this Angel apart from others of Henry VII's reign surrounds the degree of preservation. The legends are easily readable without magnification or speculative interpretation. The devices are equally crisp and clear. The obverse displays a winged angel with fully defined features, with the reverse ship exhibiting the same bold attributes. Glowing yellow luster from undulating surfaces conveys the bedazzling wealth and opulence that hammered gold coinage must have had at the time, and which is still fully appreciated centuries later by specialists in British hammered gold coinage. Few surviving examples approach this mint state level; do not miss this terrific opportunity to add a piece of high grade British numismatic history to the collection. PCGS MS-62 Secure Holder.

Estimate: $5000.00- $7000.00
