GREAT BRITAIN. Peace of Edinburgh Medal, 1560. Francis II (1559-60). NGC MS-64.
52 mm. MI-97-17. Struck in silver. RARE. Struck to commemorate the Peace of Edinburgh signed on July 6, 1560. By his marriage to Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots, the French king was sovereign over Scotland. Francis II was 15 at the time, and though of age to rule France deferred to a regency headed by his mother. While supporting the suppression of Scottish nobles the French found themselves with no alternative but to sue for peace after having been unable to receive reinforcements during the siege of Leith. The treaty led to the removal of the Scottish coat of arms from French heraldry. An exceedingly handsome example of the medal, with medium tone and well preserved surfaces. Museum quality and sure to be a meaningful addition the collection it joins. NGC MS-64.
Estimate: $700.00- $1000.00
