GREAT BRITAIN. (60) Piece Holy Scriptures Medal Set, ND (ca. 1830s). NEARLY UNCIRCULATED.
The Thomason Medallic Bible. Complete set of Sixty 73 mm White Metal Medals in 5 Leather Book-style Albums. Eimer-1238; BHM-1468. Conceived by Divine inspiration in 1827 by Sir Edward Thomason, this was his effort to produce a cohesive condensed version of the Bible in medallic form. The obverse of each medal features an intricate depiction of a Biblical event - From Adam naming the beasts to the Ascension - and the reverse bears a wordy description of the event and its implications. Thomason utilized several engravers to produce the medals, and drew his inspiration for their design from Renaissance masterworks by artists including Rembrandt, Titian, Michelangelo and da Vinci. Although individual medals from this set are frequently encountered, in recent decades the offering of A COMPLETE SET IS A RARITY. These White Metal pieces are all MINT STATE, or nearly so. their finishes ranging from fully brilliant to dull pewter-gray. None are damaged, but handling marks and contact marks are present on some pieces, and a number show microscopic pitting of the soft metal surfaces - all typical for large medals in this fabric. The 13 1/2 x 11 1/2 inch gold-stamped leather albums all show moderate wear, but are complete, three of them with the top cover separated from the rest of the heavy volume. An opportunity to add this heirloom type collection worthy of serious consideration. NEARLY UNCIRCULATED.

Estimate: $2000.00- $2500.00
