JAPAN. Presentation or Contribution Oban (10 Ryo or Kenjo Daikichi Oban), ND Manen Era (ca. 1860-62). Obanza at Edo (Special Mint Specifically for Obans). NEARLY MINT STATE.
Fr-7; cf.C-24a.1; JNDA-09-10; cf.BMC-980; cf.Jacobs-A7; cf.Munro-pl. 13/4; cf.Hartill-8.13. Type one with handmade crenellations. Security edge. Total mintage for all Manen era Obans is 17,097 pieces. Though similar in appearance these presentation issues can easily be distinguished from their regular issue counterparts by the three control marks on the reverse "Kenjo DaiKichi" which as individual characters means Dai=Great, Kichi=auspicious and Kenjo=Peace and when put together in this manner means "Presentation" or "Contribution" Oban. These presentation issues were made on the first day of the new year and were used for very special occasions. They were inspected by the head of the mint Goto Tenjo who was a direct descendant of the first head of the Mint and then given to the Shogun, Daimyos (Feudal lords) and members of the Imperial family who presented these special made Obans as gifts to high ranking officials and other people of high ranking stature. These pieces represented a sign of appreciation and honor. Ink signature original and nearly fully intact. With accompanying JNDA certificate of authenticity. NEARLY MINT STATE.

Estimate: $30000.00- $40000.00
