MEXICO. Recovery of Chamizal Gold Medal, 1963. NGC MS-62.
42 mm; 42.30 gms. Grove-824. Portraits of Kennedy, Juarez and Lopez Mateos above clasped hands; Reverse: Mexican and United States flags. Struck to commemorate the ratification of the previously negotiated 1911 resolution into a treaty which granted Mexico a total of 437 acres of disputed territory. The resolution had origins dating as far back as 1866. In exchange, the US received the 193 acre island also known as Cordova Island. The end of the 100 year old dispute came immediately after the 1962 Cuban missile crisis, and was rooted in the desire of the Kennedy administration to maintain Mexican neutrality during the Cold War. A somewhat simple design struck in high relief with the portraits in particular rendered in prominent fine detail. Prooflike fields with a few light handling marks. NGC MS-62.

Estimate: $1600.00- $1800.00
