49.22 mm; 44.47 gms. cf.Basso-700; cf.Honeycutt-4; cf.Vives-56; Medina-17. RARE. Bust of Charles III right, legend around with signature "J. Gabriel. Gil." below bust; Reverse: Galleon left, legend around with "MANILA" and "GIL" in exergue. According to Forrer the signature on the reverse is referring to Geronimo Antonio Gil while the obverse is clearly signed by his son J. Gabriel Gil who was under his immediate direction. Struck to commemorate the rebirth of the galleon trade, to promote and encourage the mainland Spanish to invest in the products produced in the Philippines and Asia, to bring them back to Spain and ultimately the rest of Europe while trying break the Dutch monopolies on the importation of spices. Minor debris amongst the devices with light wispy hairlines from being cleaned long ago now subdued with light attractive iridescent toning. Sharply struck and attractive. UNCIRCULATED.
