PHILIPPINES. Manila. Silver Prize Medal for Valor, ND (1785). By J. Gabriel Gil. Charles III (1759-1788). NGC Unc Details--Surface Hairlines.
48.31 mm; 38.27 gms. Basso-703; Honeycutt-8; Forrer-Vol. II pg.263; Vives-59; Medina-18. Bust of Charles III right, legend around with signature "J. Gabriel. Gil." below bust; Reverse: Crossed sword and cutlass with buckle superimposed all tied with ribbon within wreath, legend around "MANILA" and "GIL" below. According to Forrer the signature on the reverse is referring to Geronimo Antonio Gil while the obverse is clearly signed by his son J. Gabriel Gil who was under his immediate direction. Under royal decree of 16 March 1780 and 9 June 1781 these prize medals were given to individuals who distinguished themselves in the islands for their performance in times of war and for their application to the arts. In a letter from superintendent Mangino, Mexico, 31 January 1781 300 silver and 60 gold were to be minted. Hairlines from being cleaned long ago now subdued with light attractive toning exhibiting hues of blue. NGC Unc Details--Surface Hairlines.
