ROMANIA. 200 Lei, 1935. Bucharest Mint. NGC PROOF-64.
Stamb-154-1.1; cf.KM-53. Reeded edge. VERY RARE. The pattern striking offered here is one of a handful with the 200 Lei denomination and unlisted in many reference works. (The higher 250 Lei denominated coin with a nearly identical design, was released into circulation and was itself recalled, with all but 10,000 of the coins reportedly melted down). The 200 Lei is seldom offered, we could only locate one additional example to have recently sold at auction (from the Lissner Collection), which realized $1,600 plus premiums in 2014, but which was vastly inferior to the quality seen here. Heavy lavender, lilac, periwinkle and blue tone dominate the upper half of the obverse, with lighter clear amber and rose coloration across the lower balance of the coin. The reverse is considerably lighter, with russet toning near the periphery. Extremely well struck, as would be expected for a proof issue, with the portrait taking on a nearly high relief appearance. A coin that will launch even the most sophisticated Romanian collection to an all new level, and a piece sure to see spirited competition as it crosses the auction block. NGC PROOF-64.

From the E.E. Clain-Stefanelli Collection.

Estimate: $1000.00- $1500.00
