RUSSIA. Moldavia & Wallachia. 3 Dengi (Para) Pattern, 1771. Catherine II (the Great) (1762-96). NGC AU-58 BN.
Bit-1262(RRR); Brekke-pp148#5(RR); Diakov-1122(RRR); UZD-4906(RR). EXTREMELY RARE. The only piece seen at NGC for the specific type, and without valuation in Bitkin. Sharing the same historical context as the previous lot, but struck prior to the decision to use only local iconography in the coin's design (note the lower Brekke catalog number). All of the various designs emitted from baron Peter Gartenberg's estate at Sadagura dated 1771 are considered pattern coinage, with the adopted design for production displaying the conjoined shields of Moldovia & Wallachia that were minted in 1772, 1773 and 1774. The earlier patterns like the piece seen here, more closely resemble the coinage used domestically in Russia at the time. The double headed crowned eagle and single large cypher for Catherine are quintessentially Russian in design, and can not be mistaken for anything else. Magnificently preserved with some resemblance to a novadel striking, the piece exhibits an even dark brown coloration with exquisitely rendered rims and nearly perfect centering. A trace of porosity consistent with the era in which it was produced, and free of discoloration, imperfection or marks. The few other examples of the issue available to collectors grade less than Very Fine. That said, this piece offered here is likely the finest extant. The new owner of this piece may well find himself tempted to visit the Hermitage Museum Collection in Saint Petersburg to compare this piece to their collection. NGC AU-58 BN.

From the E.E. Clain-Stefanelli Collection.

Estimate: $3500.00- $5000.00
