RUSSIA. Moldavia & Wallachia. Silver Pattern 2 Para/3 Kopek, 1773. Sadagura Mint. Catherine II (the Great) (1762-96). NGC MS-62.
KM-Pn10; Bit-1270(RRR); Brekke-pp148#19(RRR); Diakov-1131(RRRR); UZD-4917(RRRR). EXTREMELY RARE. Crowned arms of Moldavia and Wallachia within garland of roses on pedestal line; Reverse: Dual denomination in Para and Kopeks. Per the 2003 Diakov catalog, at one point Brekke had commented that only three examples had appeared at auction in the preceding century. Struck at Peter Gartenberg's estate in Sadagura, there can be little doubt about the special status of this coin. Even casual inspection without magnification reveals an extraordinary degree of detail in the design. Clearly one of the first (if not THE first) coins to be struck from these freshly prepared dies, and prior to any damage or erosion having been sustained from their use. In the unlikely event the rarity and degree of preservation alone are not enough, surely the spectacular coloration of this EXTREMELY RARE piece is sufficient to provoke a solid bid. Every color metallurgically possible for a silver patina is represented, with amber, rose, aquamarine, lilac, lavender and countless shades of blue all detectable upon close inspection. Almost certainly the finest example extant, and a coin of both incomparable numismatic beauty and desirability. The window to acquire it will only last as long as the sale of a single auction lot; the bidder most prepared to act will be the new owner when the hammer falls on this stunning eighteenth century Russian provincial rarity. NGC MS-62.

From the E.E. Clain-Stefanelli Collection.

Estimate: $35000.00- $50000.00
