SAINT LUCIA. 6 Livres 15 Sols, ND (Local Ordinance of 20th January 1813). NGC VF Details--Scratches.
15.34 gms. KM-10.2; Prid-9. "S:Lucie" in shaped indent on the obverse of the central 1/3 cut segment of a 1799 Spanish colonial bust 8 Reales. Cuts executed from reverse following the Pillars flanking the crowned arms of Spain leaving the arms fully intact as per the local ordinance. The authorization of the cutting of monies on the island led to numerous forgeries both contemporary and modern. The cut segments circulated for nearly 40 years until finally withdrawn from circulation on August 1st, 1851. The total amount redeemed amounted to 7,400 pounds sterling with a estimation of approximately 1,000 pounds sterling unredeemed and outstanding. Edge bump at upper right with light old scratches on reverse of stamp now toned over with an attractive medium blue grey patina. Countermark well executed with full details.
