ITALY. Papal States. Generosity of the Pope Silver-Plated Bronze Medal, ND, Leo X (1513-1521). ALMOST UNCIRCULATED.
32.7mm; 16.8 gms. CNORP-237; Mazio-40. Robed bust right, legend LEO X PONTIFEX MAX around. Dramatic die break across the entire obverse; Reverse: Robed female figure spilling coins from a cornucopia. Legend LIBERALITAS PONTIFICIA above. The indulgences Leo X granted to those who would make significant donations toward the rebuilding of Saint Peter's Basilica were one of the major influences on Martin Luther in formulating his 95 Theses challenging the authority of the Roman Catholic Church and leading to the Reformation. Leo was another great patron of the arts, liberally supporting many artists and commissioning Raphael to decorate the rooms of the Vatican. ALMOST UNCIRCULATED.
