The obverse depiction is based on a painting by Ren Bonian (1840-96) who was considered to be one of the most famous painters of his time. He is sometimes referred to as one of the "four Rens". Known for his use of color and bold brushstrokes. He was influenced by the Song Dynasty painters early in his career, but later preferred the works of Zhu Da which was freer in style.
