CHINA. Pattern 50 Cents, Year 3 (1914). NGC MS-64.
L&M-68; K-655a; KM-Pn27; WS-0170; Wenchao-pg. 537#861 (rarity three stars); Shanghai Museum-Mr. Shi Jiagan's collection-pg. 139#639; Sun-III-2-17; Shih-D1-4. VERY RARE. Signed "L. GIORGI". Designed by the prolific die engraver and head of the Tientsen mint from 1910 to 1920, Luigi Giorgi, and though not his first design with the effigy of Yuan Shih-kai this would ultimately become the adopted design of the new national coinage which was first emitted on Christmas of 1914 from the newly rebuilt mint in Tientsen which had burnt down in 1912. Smooth and lovely flannel gray toning on the obverse and the reverse on the wreath, with a splash of mild key lime across the reverse legend. Tied for finest certified with only one other example in the this grade at either NGC or PCGS. A terrific rarity that is likely to elicit a flurry of bids when it reaches the auction podium. Sure to bring prestige to the next collection it calls home. NGC MS-64.
Estimate: $40000.00- $60000.00
