CHINA. Pattern "Mausoleum" Dollar, Year 16 (1927). NGC MS-63 PL.
L&M-85; K-609; Wenchao-pg. 555#898 (rarity three stars); Sun-III-4-01; WS-0130. Silver. VERY RARE. The only piece to receive the PROOFLIKE designation at the grading services. Pattern designed by Richard Placht, Austrian medalist and engraver for the Vienna mint. Although attractive and elegant in its design, the pattern was destined to be met with disapproval. While stylistically correct, the "Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum" is lacking several design elements. (Construction of the site was still under way as this pattern was being designed). Since the engraver never actually saw the site and was only supplied with drawings, elements were omitted including the mausoleum steps leading to its face. It is also noted that the engraving of Dr. Sun Yat-sen was met with disapproval from authorities in China, as it bore only partial resemblance to his actual likeness. Mintage of only 480 pieces. Virtually free of tone and with a solid strike producing a bold expressive portrait. Mark free surfaces and with bright vivid luster. Conservatively graded and housed within an older NGC holder. Highly desirable and extremely elusive in this pristine condition; a coin that is sure to add significant prestige to the collection it joins. NGC MS-63 PL.
