L&M-957; K-676a; Hsu-20; WS-0103. Plain Edge. President Hsu Shih Chang; Reverse: Pavilion. Nice detail within the pavilion design. This piece comes from our consignor's Great Grandfather, Dr. Andrew Woods, who worked as a medical missionary in China. Dr. Woods lived with his family in China between the years 1899-1928. He started as a medical missionary and worked at the Canton Christian College where he helped found their medical department. Dr. Woods later broke with the church because he felt he could no longer accept the literal interpretation of the Bible. In 1919 the Rockefeller Foundation recruited him to be a faculty member at the New Peking Union Medical College, founded in 1906, where he became the head of Neurology department. During his tenure Dr. Woods vigorously sought to expand his department to include not only Neurology, but also Psychiatry through grants from the China Medical Board (CMB). Due to lack of fulfillment to supply the necessary funds for the expansion on the part of the CMB, Dr. Woods tendered his resignation and returned to the United States with his family in 1928. Today the New Peking Union Medical College, now known as the The Peking Union Medical College (PUMC), is affiliated with Tsinghua University, one of the most prestigious colleges in China. The School is widely recognized as the best Medical school in China and was ranked 1st by China's University and College Admission System (CUCAS) in 2015 and is the only medical school in China to be affiliated with the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences.
