CHINA. 5 Ounce Silver Medal, 1987. Panda Series. NGC PROOF-67 ULTRA CAMEO.
Bruce-MB13; PAN-66a. Struck for the Long Beach Numismatic & Philatelic Exposition. With case of issue, certificate of authenticity as well as some newspaper articles detailing the frenzy these show medals produced when first introduced in June of 1987. When the China mint had come to the show to distribute these medals the Long Beach Coin Show owner, Sam Lepresto, had special coupons made to be redeemed at the show so that the person presenting said coupon could claim one of these medals. As it turns out in promoting the show and specifically these medals someone had a brilliant idea to counterfeit these coupons which in turn created a shortage of the medals. Subsequently, Mr. Lepresto ended up ordering an extra 100 medals from the China mint. Mintage of 2,000 pieces, with 1,100 distributed in the USA and the remaining 900 distributed throughout the rest of the world. Quite an interesting story told in detail in the accompanying newspaper clippings. Thin ring of tone around rim, otherwise free of haze or fog. NGC PROOF-67 ULTRA CAMEO.
