D. Junius Brutus Albinus. 48 B.C. AR denarius (18.0 mm, 3.50 g, 5 h). Rome mint. Helmeted head of Mars right / ALBINVS·BRVTI·F, two crossed Gaulish trumpets; between, oval shield above, round shield below. Crawford 450/1a; Sydenham 941; CRI 25; RSC Postumia 11. Fine, banker's marks.

Ex D. Thomas collection.

Brutus Albinus served with Caesar in Gaul and had commanded his fleet at Massalia but would later become one of his killers. (Not to be confused with M. Junius Brutus of the EID MAR denarius and "et tu Brute" fame.) Brutus Albinus had been promised the governorship of Cisalpine Gaul, the praetorship for 44 B.C., and the consulship for 44 B.C., but despite these promises, he chose to side with Caesar's assasins. He was chosen to lead Caesar to the senate house where he joined over sixty conspirators who eventually murdered the dictator in the street.
