The ruling lineage of Baroda descended from Damaji, a Maratha soldier, who received the title of distinguished swordsman in 1712. The Baroda title Gaikwad comes from the work Gaikwar or cow heard; Damajis fathers occupation. The Gaikwad family rose to prominence in the mid-eighteenth century by carving out for themselves a dominion from the territories which were previously under the control of the Poona Marathas. Baroda State maintained good relations with the British and continued as a major Princely State until 1947 when it acceded to the Union of India
