India, Princely States. Baroda. Khande Rao. 1273-1287 / 1856-1870. AR rupee (20.9 mm, 11.43 g, 11 h). RY 127x. KM Y5. Toned Fine.

The ruling lineage of Baroda descended from Damaji, a Maratha soldier, who received the title of ‘distinguished swordsman’ in 1712. The Baroda title Gaikwad comes from the work Gaikwar or cow heard; Damaji’s father’s occupation. The Gaikwad family rose to prominence in the mid-eighteenth century by carving out for themselves a dominion from the territories which were previously under the control of the Poona Marathas. Baroda State maintained good relations with the British and continued as a major Princely State until 1947 when it acceded to the Union of India
