ANGLO-SAXON, Kings of Wessex. Edward the Elder. 899-924. AR Penny (23mm, 1.56 g, 9h). Bust Diademed (BD) type (BMC iii). Mint in East Anglia (Ipswich?); Leofhelm, moneyer. Late period II, circa 920-924. + EADVVEARD REX, diademed bust left / LIOFH/ELM M–O in two lines; three crosses pattée between, cross flanked by trefoils above, trefoil below. CTCE 31; SCBI 9 (Ashmolean), 309 (same dies); BMC –; North 651; SCBC 1084. Good VF, toned, areas of weak strike. Charming portrait.
