Quasi-Autonomous Ӕ Medallion of Cyzicus, Mysia. Reign of Caracalla, circa AD 214-217. KOPH CΩTԐIPA, draped bust of Kore right, wearing wreath of corn-ears / ΑΥΡ ΑΝΤΩΝΕΙΝΙΑΝΩΝ ΚΥΖΙΚΗΝΩΝ, Hades with the struggling figure of Kore in quadriga galloping right; ΔIE NEΩKOPΩN in exergue. This medallion of Cyzicus can be understood within the context of Caracalla's passage through Asia Minor in AD 214-215, which presumably included a visit to the city. Three contemporary medallions of Cyzicus are comparable (see SNG France 776 and 778, and a single example offered by Harlan J Berk inventory no. cc68916), though only the Berk example shares the obverse bust of Kore and all differ in their reverse types. Despite this, the reverse legends on these examples all boast the second neocorate (ΔIE NEΩKOPΩN) and the title of Antoninian (ΑΝΤΩΝΕΙΝΙΑΝΩΝ) bestowed upon the city by Caracalla. Unlike the obverses depicting Caracalla in his capacity as neokoros, this obverse depicts Kore, a prominent cult figure of the city in her own right. Indeed, the second neocorate may have been held by Kore herself.
