The last Grand Master, Albert converted to Lutheranism and became the first monarch of the Duchy of Prussia (the secularised state that emerged from the former Monastic State of the Teutonic Knights in 1525) after a four year truce following the devastating war with Poland over land in eastern Prussia. He was therefore was the first European ruler to establish Lutheranism, and thus Protestantism, as the official state religion of his lands.
