MACEDONIAN KINGDOM. Alexander III the Great (336-323 BC). AV stater (19mm, 8.38 gm, 12h) Posthumous issue of Bithynia, Calchedon, ca. 260-220 BC. Head of Athena right, wearing crested Corinthian helmet decorated with serpent / AΛΕΞΑΝΔ[PoY], Nike standing left, holding wreath and stylis; KA monogram in left field, HP monogram below left wing. Price 910 (Callatis). NGC (as Bithynia, Calchedon) Choice XF 5/5 - 3/5, Fine Style, Edge Marks.This gold stater, with types identical to those of the great conqueror, was issued nearly a century after his death by a city on the Black Sea, either Calchedon in Bithynia or Callatis in Thrace. Recent research and analysis of find spots suggests Calchedon as the mint city, while the traditional attribution employed by Martin Price has been Callatis.
