SYRIA. Coele-Syria. Chalkis. Zenodoros, tetrarch (31-20 BC), with Octavian. Æ 20mm (6.85 gm). Bare head of Zenodaros left / Bare head Octavian right. Cf. HGC 9, 1454 (types reversed). Cf. RPC I 4774 (same). SNG Copenhagen 417. Extremely rare, possibly unrecorded variant? Brown patina, Very Fine. All reference works on the Chalkis coinage depicting the Tetrarch Zenodoros paired with Octavian describe the obverse as bearing Octavian's portrait, while the reverse depicts Zenodoros. On this example, the types are clearly reversed, with the younger head of Octavian on the punch (reverse) die. Also, the letters NE run horizontally across the reverse field, behind Octavian's head, which does not occur on any published examples.
