Odovacar. Gold Tremissis (1.33 g), 476-493 EF. Ravenna, in the name of Zeno. D N ZENO PERP F AVG, diademed, draped and cuirassed bust of Zeno right, of rough style. Reverse: Cross within wreath; COMOB. RIC 3640 (r3); Depeyrot 43/7 (Milan). Extremely rare - Depeyrot records just seven examples. Small die-break noted on the obverse. Extremely Fine.
RIC notes two styles of this obverse legend variety from Ravenna which was struck in the name of Zeno by Odovacer, the leader of the Germanic Foederati who was de facto ruler over much of Italy during the reign of Julius Nepos. The first, RIC 3638, is of good style, while the second, RIC 3640, is quite crude, like the example offered here with an elongated head narrowing at the crown. Estimated Value $1,500 - 2,000

Purchased in 1970; From the Aurora Family Collection.
