AE Medallion; Antonio Canova; Because his father, a stonemason, already died when Antonio Canova was three years old, he grew up with a brother of his father. At the age of 14 years Canova began an apprenticeship with the Venetian sculptor Giuseppe Bernardi, who was named after his teacher Torretti. After the death of his teacher in 1773 Canova worked first with his teachers nephew Bernardis and the sculptor Giovanni Ferrari, in 1775 Canova went independent.
