FRANCE: Louis XVIII, 2nd reign, 1815-1824, pattern AR 5 franc, 1820, Maz-795, Essai in silver by N. Tiolier, elaborate monogram of Antoine Roy with Légion d'Honneur below / A S. EXC. M. ROY MINSTRE SECR. D' ETAT DES FINANCES L' ADMINISTRATION GÉNÉRALE DES MONNAIES 10. BRE 1820 in eight lines, light apricot and pewter toning over immaculate surfaces, an attractive and rarely encountered type, MS64, RR. Antoine, comte Roy (1764-1847) was a French lawyer and politician. He was a National Representative during the Hundred Days when Napoleon returned from Elba, a Deputy from 1815 to 1821, a peer of France and three times Minister of Finance. Nicolas-Pierre Tiolier (1784-1843) was a French sculptor and engraver of coins and medals. He succeeded his father as 16th general engraver of coins in September 1816 and held this position until the end of December 1842. He engraved the seals of Louis XVIII, Charles X and the Order of the Holy Spirit, and also engraved medals for Louis-Philippe. He was made a knight of the Legion of Honor in July 1825.
