Hadrian. AD 117-138. Æ As (25.5mm, 11.33 g, 5h). Rome mint. Struck circa AD 124-128. Laureate bust right, slight drapery / Janus standing facing, looking in three directions, holding scepter and resting hand on hip. RIC II 662. VF, green patina, some gray and red.

Janus was the god of beginnings, looking both to the past and the future. The first month of the calendar year was named after him. While his portrait is common to Roman Republican coinage, he is only rarely depicted on Roman Imperial coins.
